Denmark Agrees Anti-Blasphemy Laws Need To Be Repealed Except For Its Own Law

created image with the text No Blasphemy AllowedLast week during the current session of the UN Human Rights Council, when statements were allowed on a special report on Freedom of Religion or Belief, the representative from Denmark agreed with the report that anti-blasphemy laws needed to be repealed but her government elected to leave an anti-blasphemy clause in its penal code. The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) was not amused.

You’re Against War In Syria? Okay, Then What Is The Solution?

photo showing vicitims of war in Syria in a graveIn a press statement last week, President Obama indicated that he believed that there should be a military response against the government of Syria. The reason given was intelligence that the Assad government had used chemical weapons against civilians and the rebels in the current civil war. The use of chemical weapons is violation of international law. Many of my friends who are Humanists have been screeching ‘NO WAR!’ yet fail to offer a realistic non-military solution. Sometimes solutions are difficult but a common refrain in Humanism is to tell people what we are for and not just what we are against. If we are going to be against war then we need to offer a viable realistic non-military solution.

If You Plan On Opposing Secular Humanism, Do Your Homework

As you can imagine there are far more negative articles written about it than positive – which is okay. It’s also pretty easy to spot when someone hasn’t really done any research about secular humanism and just repeats false or misleading information. Usually such articles come from religious conservatives like the minister from Iowa Park Texas. I would say, if you plan on opposing secular humanism, at least do your homework.

IHEU Statement To The United Nations Points Out Criminalization Of Freethought Around The World

image of a Holy Bible with a warning stickerThe International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) gave a report to the United Nations detailing that Atheists, humanists, freethinkers and other non-religious people are discriminated against around the world, where expression of their views is often criminalized and subject to capital punishment. The report was in response to efforts by Islamic countries to obtain a world ban on “defamation of religion”. Freedom of Religion and freedom of expression shouldn’t be in conflict.
